“JAGUARS EDGE TOWARDS PROMOTION”

Nomads Jaguars have taken another step towards promotion from Division Two of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League with a hard-fought 6-4 win over cup finalists Brotherhood F.

Gary Stallwood retained his 100% record whilst Brian Parish won twice, including an 11-9 in the decider victory over Peter Hall, but he failed to take a hat-trick, losing 11-7 in the fifth to Ian Fielder.

And so it was left to Harry Harris to take the crucial winning point for Nomads by beating Fielder 12-10, 11-9, 10-12, 11-13, 11-7, all of which leaves the Jaguars needing just five points from two matches to guarantee the second promotion spot.

The Jaguars’ cause was helped by Brotherhood C’s emphatic

10-0 win over Lawford, a result that effectively ends Lawford’s outside promotion hopes and confirms Brotherhood C as champions.

Elsewhere, there were a couple each for Peter Hall and Ian Fielder for Brotherhood F in the 6-4 win against club-mates Brotherhood D, Harry Hawkes playing well for the “D” team, overcoming Hall and Russell Hillier and only narrowly losing 11-8 in the fifth to Fielder.

But Brotherhood D’s four points were enough to maintain the status quo at the bottom as relegation rivals Nomads Lions lost 6-4 to Windsor Ravens, despite a John Weller maximum.

Brian Baines had an unexpected win over Brian Challis which secured a share of the spoils for Brotherhood E against Nomads Cougars, whilst it was also all-square in the Walton D v Windsor Harriers match, Windsor reserve Lewis McKenny taking a point.

In Division Three, second-placed Windsor Ladybirds beat third-placed Nomads Tigers 8-2, Angela Barratt and Tricia Salter taking trebles, but Sheila Howe losing 15-13 in the fifth to Rowan Ward.

But leaders Windsor Roosters, 10-0 winners over Windsor Swallows, extended their lead at the top to three points, only Iris Howlett’s match against Caroline North going to a fifth set.

Brotherhood L’s progress this season was evidenced when, in their final match, they beat the experienced Nomads Pumas 6-4, James Denyer undefeated, with Rowan Cottee beating Lionel Goddard and Wally Ingram, and losing close in five to John Houghton.

John Thompson of Brotherhood H recorded a fine hat-trick of wins over John Harvey, Matt Wright and Dan Wright but Harvey’s 12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 3-11, 13-11 win over Ryan Thompson in the final match of the evening gave the Penguins a narrow 6-4 victory.

Brotherhood I were 9-1 winners against a two-man Brotherhood G, Giorgio Triantafyllou taking the “G” team’s consolation point with an 11-9 in the decider win against Pauline Edmonds.

Brotherhood J beat Brotherhood K 8-2, David Wilkin and Adam Wilkin unbeaten and Ian Watson taking one for the winners, Zac Fitzpatrick and Michael Gallone winning a point each for the losers.

In Division One Brotherhood A were 10-0 winners against Red Triangle, Alan Burgess’ 11-7 in the decider win against Paul Meikle the closest match of the evening, but Brotherhood B, 9-1 winners over Windsor Eagles, are still on track for the title.

A weakened Eagles then earned a draw with Red Triangle, Martin Edwards unbeaten for Windsor, whilst John Rankin took two for the Triangle including a 14-12 in the fifth win over John Hobson.

Nomads Panthers defeated Walton A 6-4, Colin Webber staying unbeaten, and George Kalli clinching the win with a 3-11, 18-16,

6-11, 14-12, 14-12 success over Kevin James.

Neil Crook took a maximum as Walton B defeated Windsor Condors 6-4, although it was a tight 11-9 in the fifth against John Pattrick, and it was also 6-4 as Walton C beat Windsor Hawks, hat-tricks here for Claude Snell and Graham Buxton.

* There will be 72 players competing in the League’s Closed Championships, sponsored by Paul Newbould Planning and Building Design Services, on 12th and 13th April at Colbayns School. Details about check-in times have been sent to all competitors.
