“PENGUINS’ PROGRESS”

Windsor Penguins will not be winning the Division Three title in the Clacton and District Table League this season but their position, in the middle of the table, represents real progress for the team of Paul Wright and his sons, Matthew and Daniel.

Three years ago, in their first League season, they finished one from the bottom, but they have shown that practice and persistence pays and they are now proving more than useful performers in the Division, with an outside chance of honours next year.

This week, the Penguins chalked up their ninth win of the season with an 8-2 success over Brotherhood I, Matthew staying unbeaten, and Daniel and Paul taking two each, Paul’s two points coming the week after he celebrated a first-ever League hat-trick.

At the top of the Division, the bruising battle between Windsor Ladybirds and Windsor Roosters continues, the Ladybirds this week beating Windsor Swallows 10-0, and the Roosters defeating

Brotherhood L 9-1, despite Mark Smith losing out to James Denyer.

And although Nomads Tigers, 10-0 winners over Brotherhood J, could still go up, their promotion chances are mathematical rather than realistic.

So, with three matches to play and both Windsor teams virtually certain to finish as the top two, the Roosters lead the Ladybirds by just one point in the struggle to be crowned Divisional champions.

Elsewhere, it was 10-0 as Nomads Pumas beat Brotherhood G, James Smith-Daye pushing Lionel Goddard all the way before losing 11-9 in the fifth, and also 10-0 for Brotherhood H over

Brotherhood K, Jenna Thompson taking a debut League maximum.

In Division One Windsor Kestrels, by virtue of having to bring matches forward, ended their League programme with the toughest of fixtures against Brotherhood A and their 10-0 defeat at the hands of the reigning champions was a surprise to no-one.

But it is Brotherhood B, 10-0 winners against Windsor Hawks, who lead the way at the top and remain favourites to snatch the title from Brotherhood A.

Walton C defeated Windsor Falcons 8-2, Claude Snell’s three including a close 11-9 in the fifth win over Barry Howe, but the result means that the Falcons are relegated alongside the Kestrels.

Colin Webber and Gill Locke were again unbeaten for Nomads Panthers, 8-2 victors over Windsor Condors, Matthew Watson was Walton B’s best player as his side defeated Red Triangle 9-1, whilst Windsor Eagles beat a weakened Walton A 7-3.

In Division Two Brotherhood C beat Brotherhood E 9-1, Paul Alden

unexpectedly losing to Tony Edmonds, but Alden was in top form as the only unbeaten player in his team’s 8-2 defeat of Nomads Cougars, the two results confirming Brotherhood C’s promotion.

Nomads Jaguars are favourites to take the second promotion spot, their trio this week beating Brotherhood D 10-0, the closest match seeing Brian Parish beat Harry Hawkes 11-8 in the fifth.

Third-placed Lawford continue to shine, this week beating lowly Windsor Magpies 9-1, Ian Sherwood and Andrew Jones unbeaten, although Windsor’s Graham Bunce did well to beat Peter Sear, whilst Ron Dacey lost close in five to both Sear and Jones.

The Magpies’ hold on their Division Two status is looking increasingly tenuous, but Nomads Lions kept their chances of survival alive by taking advantage of a weakened Brotherhood F, winning 7-3 despite three from Brotherhood’s Peter Hall.

Finally, David North showed excellent form to take a maximum in Walton D’s 7-3 success against Brotherhood D, whilst Windsor Ravens beat a below-strength Windsor Harriers 6-4, Jason Gale taking a third hat-trick in as many matches for the Harriers.

* The League’s premier event, the Closed Championships, takes place on 12th and 13th April. Details have been sent to all players. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 25th March. For more details, contact Peter White, Tony Oswick or Brian Rowlen.
