“ALMOST THERE!”Brotherhood B are within sight of the winning post in the race for the Division One title of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League. This week, the Brotherhood B side faced a potential minefield against the more-than-useful Nomads Panthers but they survived intact and emerged as worthy 9-1 winners.Nomads’ Colin Webber played well to beat Martin Hogg whilst only just losing 7-11, 13-15, 11-7, 11-9, 10-12 to Colin Stallwood, but unbeaten performances from Stallwood and Gary Young saw Brotherhood home. And so, with two matches to play, Brotherhood B need just fifteen points to be assured of taking the champions’ mantle from Brotherhood A in one of the best title races for many seasons.Elsewhere, a weakened Walton A drew with Windsor Condors, John Rice and Fred Button both going down to Windsor’s John Pattrick, but Rice and Button both took hat-tricks in Walton A’s second match of the week, a 7-3 victory over Windsor Hawks.Paul Meikle stayed unbeaten for Red Triangle against Windsor Falcons but the already-relegated Falcons celebrated with a hard-fought 6-4 victory, Barry Howe excelling to take a couple, including an 11-8 in the fifth win over John Rankin. In Division Two Gary Stallwood was again unbeaten as Nomads Jaguars beat Windsor Ravens 6-4, the same score by which Lawford beat Brotherhood E, despite a hat-trick from Brotherhood’s Kevin Pryor. But these results mean that Lawford cannot now catch the Jaguars who are thus guaranteed the second promotion spot.Brotherhood C, already crowned as champions, ended their campaign in style with a 9-1 win over struggling Windsor Magpies, although Windsor’s Ron Dacey will feel pleased with his 12-10,10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 14-12 success against Miles Vousden. The Magpies’ fellow-strugglers, Nomads Lions, are still fighting hard, this week beating Walton D 8-2 in their final match of the season, the Nomads winning four of the five matches that went close in five, Terry Kirby outstanding in taking a hat-trick.However, the Lions and Magpies have only the slimmest of slim mathematical chances of survival, Brotherhood D needing just three points from their last two matches to consign the Nomads and Windsor sides to lower Division table tennis next season. Finally in Division Two, Nomads Cougars defeated Windsor Harriers 6-4, despite Windsor’s Jason Gale defeating Nomads’ Paul Woolnough in the crunch match of the evening. In Division Three Windsor Roosters were 8-2 victors over Nomads Tigers, Mark Smith unbeaten for the winners and Rowan Ward doing well to take a couple for the losers, whilst Windsor Ladybirds were easy 10-0 winners over Brotherhood K.So, with one match to play, the Roosters lead the Ladybirds by just a single point and now need a 10-0 win from their final match to take the title but, with that match being against bottom team Brotherhood K, the outcome is surely a mere formality.Elsewhere, it was 8-2 for Nomads Pumas against Windsor Swallows, Malcolm Caley taking the losers’ two points with wins over John Bowers and Barry Brandon, whilst Windsor Penguins were comfortable 10-0 winners against Brotherhood G.* The League’s premier event of the season, the Closed Championships sponsored by Paul Newbould Planning and Building Design Services, take place this weekend, on Saturday 12th April and Sunday 13th April, at Colbayns School Sports Hall.Play starts at 9.30 am on both days with the finals – seven on Saturday and five on Sunday - scheduled to begin after 3.00 pm on each day. Spectators are welcome and admission is free.RESULTSDivision 1Windsor Hawks 3 Walton A 7;Brotherhood B 9 Nomads Panthers 1;Windsor Condors 5 Walton A 5;Red Triangle 4 Windsor Falcons 6.Division 2Windsor Harriers 4 Nomads Cougars 6;Windsor Magpies 1 Brotherhood C 9;Nomads Jaguars 6 Windsor Ravens 4;Nomads Lions 8 Walton D 2;Brotherhood E 4 Lawford 6.Division 3Windsor Penguins 10 Brotherhood G 0;Windsor Swallows 2 Nomads Pumas 8;Brotherhood K 0 Windsor Ladybirds 10;Nomads Tigers 2 Windsor Roosters 8. |
